I understand this was written for young adults but I thoroughly enjoyed it as well. A bit difficult at times to get past the heavy Scottish accents and words, but worth the effort. Also, because of the Kindle, I was able to look up a lot of words I had not seen before and also learned new usage for words I already knew. Enough of that. This book combines deep human emotions, scars, ingrained personalities, with those same traits in dogs and sets them in an old sheep raising community. I laughed, cried, and looked inside myself a lot while reading this book. I wish there were more like it. I highly recommend this book for those interested in human nature, family relationships, communities, and dogs. And to think that the book was free!Product details

Bob son of battle Alfred Ollivant 9781176219205 Books Reviews
Bob, Son of Battle is an old-fashioned tale, very enjoyable on a literal level, that rises to nearly epic proportions when examined as a character study. A story of shepherds and their dogs in northern England in the late nineteenth century, this book paints a fine portrait of faithful, skillful Bob and his gentle master, James Moore, but where the author truly shines is in his portrayal of Moore's and Bob's antagonists, the crotchety Adam M'Adam and his evil-tempered Red Wull. A book worth reading for its portrait of a century-old culture; of sheepdogs, their work, and the thrilling annual quest for the Dale Cup; and of a pitiful old man who is more complex than he at first seems.
This book was the first book I ever owned. I had the children's book (shorter version). I knew Bob before I knew Lassie. If it isn't already, it should be a classic. I was so glad to be able to replace this great story. If you like old country stories and an absolutely wornderful story about an incredible dog, you'll love this book.
Very interesting story, but sometimes difficult to read because it is written as if spoken by a person in Ireland. I was given this book as a child, and never read it. I think that it would have distressed me then, as I feel this is not a children's book. It is good reading for an adult, but you have to keep reading and never give up. I am very glad that I finally read it.
5 stars
This book is huge, bigger than any normal book in my library, and inside it's just a typewritten copy someone transcribed from the real book.
As the most memorable books of my bookish childhood come available on , I am rereading them. From the perspective of my 70 plus years, Bob, Son of Battle is only improved. As a child I could not fully appreciate the story or the masterly telling of it. Then it seemed merely "a pretty good dog story". Now I see it as deserving of a permanent place among the classics of animal stories for all ages. This book is worth the read.
The story is much as I remember it and I am pleased to be able to show my grandchildren how dialect is written.
I thought that "Bob, Son of Battle" was a Jack London title, but I misremembered, even if I gave that name to a dog who adopted us just before Christmas(2012). Our "Bob" is a piece of destructive work half yellow lab and half border collie, unlike the fictional Bob.
I must have read a kiddy-fied version of the ca. 1900 novel when I was a child because the original is quite dark, much like De Maupasant's stories about French peasants. This Yorkshire is not that of "All Creatures," but the novel is well worth reading. Besides, it's free!
