The little work now presented to the Public is the first attempt to publish a series of plates or pictures wholly executed by the new art of Photogenic Drawing, without any aid whatever from the artist's pencil.

The term “Photography” is now so well known, that an explanation of it is perhaps superfluous; yet, as some persons may still be unacquainted with the art, even by name, its discovery being still of very recent date, a few words may be looked for of general explanation.

It may suffice, then, to say, that the plates of this work have been obtained by the mere action of Light upon sensitive paper. They have been formed or depicted by optical and chemical means alone, and without the aid of any one acquainted with the art of drawing. It is needless, therefore, to say that they differ in all respects, and as widely us possible, in their origin, from plates of the ordinary kind, which owe their existence to the united skill of the Artist and the Engraver.

The reproductions in this so-called book are absolutely awful. I just spent an afternoon looking at the originals. I did not expect the plates in this book to look like the originals, but they look like really crappy photo copies. I knew this was a bargain book but I thought because it was a reproduction of the original that it might be a slightly higher quality. It’s not. The original photos are very subtle and delicate and if you want that level of quality you’re going to have to pay a whole lot more than this. Lesson learned

I am a director of KWS Publishers, which recently published a new edition of The Pencil of Nature. You correctly list our book (a hardback, priced at $150), though, oddly, you offer no discount for this title--then list both a and a paperback edition. Neither the edition nor the paperback edition is a replica of our book. They should not be listed together.

Our edition of Pencil of Nature was subject to a 9-page review in the June issue of Art and Antiques, and this has provoked many people to order it, from you, on or as a paperback--and we are inundated with complaints that these formats do not give them the book they read about. I don't know why we are being subjected to complaints that are the result of 's mistake, but we would be very grateful if you would correct your entry.

Repeat the edition and the paperback edition that you list immediately after your listing for our book are NOT (in either case) replicas of our book.

I miss the photos. There is only text in the book!
Contrary to expectations, the edition does not contain any photographs! The publisher of the reproduction has plenty to complain about.

I was very disappointed. Pencil of Nature is a rare book by one of the inventors of the photography process - Fox Talbot. The book should have illustrations and the photographer's description of each plate. However, this version included just the descriptions, making the book only marginally useful.
Just ordered the kindle version because I'm taking a photography class and wanted to see more of Talbot's work, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! It is only descriptions, no photos, ultimately useless.
