Woodcraft and Camping (Illustrated) eBook George W. Sears Nessmuk Reviews
It's strange to look at camping through the eyes of the early 1800 life it was a joy and easy read.
There is some good advice and ideas, but without illustrations they'd be difficult to actually use.
If you are into the outdoors and want to do it the way they use to do it, then this is the book for you. Very good info and the illustration are a nice touch. I bought this because I like seeing how our ancestors camped without all the "cool" stuff we have today. Makes you realize you can enjoy camping and the like without a huge investment. The only reason it got 4 instead of 5 stars is some of the info on the gear is dated and can be easily replace by new/ better versions of today. If you are into history and the great outdoors, this is the book for you.
A must read for every survivalist out there. This is the real stuff. Plus it's kinda cool in a James Fennimore Cooper way. And don't forget, the guy who wrote it went on to found the world's greatest dry goods store.

The author was 40 years older than Horace Kephart who wrote a more extensive book with a similar title. Both men wrote for Field and Stream, both were conservationists, both were instrumental in having major wilderness parks established. Sears wrote under the pen name of Nessmuk and it is to his mentor, Nessmuk, that Kephart dedicates his book. Sear's wilderness was the Adirondacks and he set off in light-weight canoes he had made to his specifications. A great read whose philosophy of wilderness and camping will never be out of date.
Tons of old timey advice, wonderful stories and a perspective of modern day life from a century ago. Nessmuks ability to use a forgotten form of English will have you consulting the thesaurus repeatedly. Wonderful read from an author that, as a young man, went to sea for adventure, about the same time in history as another soon to be author...Herman Melville, and we all are very familiar with his writings. Buy this book and enjoy the lessons therein.
It is good reading for sure and makes one want to head for the hills and streams. My complaint is that the illustrations that he refers to are not there and this renders the kindle book must less useful. I ordered a paperback and hopefully they are there.
After reading the numerous reviews both positive and negative, I have determined that this book is worth the 5 star ratings. Now, bare in mind that the pictures are little better than period line drawings in black and white, but when used with the text and a little something called imagination and common sense, you can clearly get a picture of how it needs to be done. I would say that this book is for someone who has at least some experience in the outdoors from fishing to camping, and hunting. This is not necessarily a beginners book, but in some respects, it will help them as well. The equipment described in this book is also do to the time period, however, it will still work the same today as it did back then (In fact, science has proven that clothing from 1,000 years ago kept the vikings warmer, and drier on their voyage here, than modern day clothing ever could have.) Another thing to keep in mind is that Nessmuk would teach us against having heavy packs full of gear that we don't need, and that the only time he might consider such trivial items is when he is hunting/fishing from a well established camp and could afford some extra weight.
